Game night

When I’m visiting my mom, every night is game night. The game of choice these days is Rummikub. This has been played by our family in the early 1970’s when it first came to North America. It was my Papa Truss who introduced it to us.

However, after moving to BC, I forgot about the game. Then a few years back my mom played it with me, my wife, and my girls when we visited her in Toronto. Now we all have our own copies of the game and sometimes my daughters play online.

What’s fun about this game is that the tiles played can be reused to create alternate sets using additional tiles from your hand. So the game evolves and changes with each play. Sometimes you’ll have great plans only to have them completely disrupted by the player before you. Other terms you think you aren’t close to winning and one round later you’re able to get rid of most of your tiles.

But the best part of the game is playing it with family. I’ve had a lot of fun this holiday and a big part of that has been playing Rummikub with my wife, sister, and mom. For now, it’s our game of choice.

Halloween fun (again)

Last year I shared my Halloween Fun post about the high school principal’s costume contest. The theme was TV shows/sitcoms from the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s. Well our Carol Burnette Show lip sync of a skit was the clear winner, and so this year my team got to pick the theme. We chose Super Heroes.

We lost a principal, Rissa, to retirement and Judy stepped in. Stephanie, who chose the theme, also chose The Greatest American Hero as our hero. We decided that all 3 of us would play the hero, rather than playing different characters in the show, and yesterday we took a few photos in costume at lunch.

After 20 minutes of photo editing in PowerPoint (where I took the background off of a few pictures), and a few more minutes finding a couple computer screen wallpaper backgrounds to superimpose us onto, I had what I needed to embed us into the opening credits of the show.

When I got home from I spent about 40 minutes in iMovie and came up with this:

A few editing tricks I used were: a simple smashed glass sound byte and an image of a broken glass sticker for the crash; slowing down the video clips of the hero flying; and, reversing the clip of the hero falling back so it looked like he was getting up.

The odds of us winning the contest 2 years in a row is almost zero, and this was far less effort than we put in last year, but we had fun and I think we will get a few laughs with our attempt.

Fun escape

Yesterday we took our students bowling. Our PAC, Parent Advisory Council, paid for the event. With my back issues I didn’t bowl, but it was great to see students and staff having a fun afternoon together.

Bowling is a fun sport where students are a lot more equalized in skill than many other sports. Most people don’t know how to bowl well, and while athleticism can help, being athletic doesn’t make you a good bowler.

For us, it’s an affordable, fun event and the bowling alley is a 5 minute walk from our school so there’s no transportation costs. I wish I got to participate, but it was still great to see students having fun in a completely different context. Sometimes we can take school too seriously, and forget that kids are still kids. An event like this is a good reminder.

Kids being kids

Last night we had a school dance. I’m at a school with only 87 students, over 50 students came. The whole thing was organized by students, there was a student DJ, and the atmosphere was as alive as if there were 250 students there.

Most kids dressed up really fancy, some were in clothes they wore at school. Most danced, some sat in small groups and talked. Very few spent time on their phones. Everyone seemed to have fun.

This is a crazy time of year. My days involve a constant flow of overlapping demands. I had a Principal’s Christmas dinner on Monday night, I had my daughter’s university showcase performance Tuesday night, and I was at the school yesterday for close to 14 hours, only leaving after helping our custodian and locking up after the last students left… but it was totally worth it to see kids being kids.

Make believe

Halloween isn’t just for kids. Sure they get most of the candy and attention, but a lot of grown-ups wear costumes for work and for parties… and while some complain, many get right into it. Doesn’t matter if you’re a pirate, a ghoul, a celebrity, a superhero, or a favourite movie character, the makeup, costume, and accessories are donned with excitement, and even pride.

It’s not just a costume, it’s a chance to play make believe like when you were a kid. No, you aren’t fully immersing yourself in your character, but you are reminding yourself of that time in your life. You are getting a little piece of your childhood back.

And it’s fun (if you let it be fun). So if you didn’t have fun with it this year, that’s on you. Next year put a little more into it. Let yourself enjoy the youthful playfulness of dressing up. Play make believe for a night and escape back into your inner child for just a few hours. For a little extra fun, make your own costume rather than buying one. Add some creativity to your play.

Halloween fun

For the past few years our high school Principals and Vice Principals have run a fun Halloween costume contest. It often includes elaborate photos and even skits. The theme this year was TV shows/sitcoms from the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s. I have two other principals in my building and one of them suggested we get together to compete. The Carol Burnette Show was selected and we dressed up for a Momma’s Family skit about playing the board game ‘Sorry’.

We decided to lip sync a part of the skit. I set up two cameras, and with the help of a teacher at lunch on Friday, we ran through the skit twice (a bit more than that with a false start the second time. It took less than 30 minutes from set up to finish.

Saturday morning I spent just over 2 hours editing and here is the result:

It’s fun putting together something like this. I watched it later and had a few more ideas to add, but rather than spending way too much time making minuscule adjustments, I ended up deciding that it’s good enough. It was fun and it’s done.

Wait for it

Anticipation is a funny thing. When you look forward to something that you are excited about, the anticipation can work in your favour or against you. It can be a big part of the event, the buildup actually becomes part of the experience. It can be more fun than the actual event, like planning a surprise party for someone else where the organizing and conspiring brings great joy. It could also ruin the event when expectations exceed outcomes.

I have never been someone that gets overly excited in anticipation, and so it always fascinates me to see others build up anticipation. When my kids were young, I used to fake anticipation to play along with theirs. I didn’t want my lack of anticipation to be something that took away their joy in looking forward to an event.

I remember when we lived in China, my wife and her sister planned to surprise our kids on a visit to Thailand. My sister-in-law, brother-in-law, and their two kids were going to meet us in Chang Mai, and our kids didn’t know. The day came after a lot of excited planning and we went to a night market knowing they would be there too. The surprise was amazing. It was a wonderful reunion!

After the holiday we were flying home and one of my daughters said, “I wish that I knew they were coming so that I could have been excited longer.” I wasn’t expecting to hear this. Upon reflection of the surprise, she thought it would have been more fun to know in advance and be thrilled in the knowing. It wasn’t like she was sad, she really loved the time together, she just wished the knowing and anticipatory waiting was part of the event rather than the surprise.

That little conversation helped me appreciate the value of anticipation more. It helped me see that if you don’t build it up too much anticipation could be part of the fun. They say good things come to those who wait, but maybe sometimes the wait itself is a good thing.

Wanna bet?

About 5 years ago I made a bet that something specific would happen in Canadian political news within 1 year. 4 years ago I admitted defeat, when it didn’t happen. So, I owed my friend a dinner. Life got busy, covid hit, and I still owed my debt. For the record, I reminded him I owed him this debt far more than he reminded me.

Last night I paid it off… I took my buddy out to a nice dinner. We had a wonderful time, chatting away for hours. And, we had an excellent meal. I have to say that while I don’t like that I was wrong about my prediction and thus lost the bet, it felt great to finally pay off this debt. It actually bothered me that it took so long.

I don’t tend to make a lot of bets, and in fact can’t remember a similar kind of bet made since I made this one 5 years ago. But I’m tempted to make another one like this because here’s the thing, if losing a bet means I get to have dinner with a friend, that’s not a real loss. That said, if I do make a similar bet, I want to win next time. The competition is fun, and win or lose, I’ll have fun, but I’m a bit competitive in nature and so I’d be in it to win it… you can bet on that!

Puzzled

Today my family went to an Escape/Breakout room. A fun place where you work in small groups to solve puzzles and escape the room(s) before time runs out. Along the way, you can ask for help a couple times.

We asked for help, we didn’t break out, we ran out of time.

I find that I enjoy puzzles, but I’m not good with time limits. I slip down rabbit holes and spend a long time on cold trails, hoping they’ll get hot. I will spend way too long looking for clues where they are none, while oblivious to the clues right in front of my face.

Sometimes I can solve complex puzzles and sometimes I miss the simple solutions to easier puzzles. Sometimes I can get stumped again and again and persevere without success. Other times my perseverance is rewarded. I’ve learned that there are certain puzzles that captivate me, and some I have no patience for. But I do love to be puzzled, and I get a lot of joy out of solving complex puzzles, or at least trying.

Fishing in a dinghy

The water on Lake Okanagan was nice and smooth this morning. So, after another early hike, I decided to hop into our tiny inflatable dinghy and do a bit of fishing. This is a somewhat comical experience. The dinghy is barely big enough for me. The small oars get in the way of casting. I’ve got a small backpack with my fishing gear, my flip flops for the rocky beach landing, and my phone in a waterproof case with a strap around my neck.

It’s not easy to cast, and trolling is tough because I can’t keep a consistent speed or direction. I did end up trolling for most of the hour I went out. I used a jig and a float so that my inconsistent paddling would help the jig move sporadically, without sinking to the weedy shore.

I didn’t catch anything. I didn’t expect to. I watched an osprey dive for a fish, it too was unsuccessful. Still, I went for a little fishing trip this morning and I might go out again tomorrow.

Upon returning I did the hike again with my wife and daughter. Then I made pancakes and bacon on our outdoor stove. I have to say that starting my day this way is really making me feel like I’m recharging my batteries this holiday break. Dinghy fishing may not be an ideal way to catch fish, but it makes for a pretty idyllic holiday.
