Blogging Reader Revival

I’m not ready to do it, but maybe someone out in the blogosphere can. Do you know what we need? A revival of Google Reader. Somebody with a paid version of a good AI coder needs to get on this. Build a version of Google reader but with some AI brilliance added in.

3 new features:

1. Have it learn from the reader. Whichever feeds the reader spends more time on gets priority in the feed.

2. AI summaries of the posts. The reader can choose from 3 levels, ranging from a one line summary to a detailed synopsis.

3. An audio reader option.

Make it free for up to 6 feeds, $6 a year for 20 feeds, or $12 a year for unlimited feeds. I’m sick and tired of apps gouging us for yearly fees.

So, who wants it and who’s going to build it?

In and out

I joined a gym, and I took advantage of a deal to get 5 sessions with a trainer, for a great price. My trainer had me download MyFitnessPal, an App to track my calories and macros. I’ve been using this app for 10 days now and it has taught me a lot.

What I’ve learned first and foremost is that I have been totally clueless about my food intake. It’s such an important part of living healthy and yet I have had no idea what and how much protein I eat daily. I’m oblivious to how many calories I eat, and have zero sense for volume or weight of the food I eat… which makes knowing the benefits or consequences of my food intake impossible.

I’ve ranged from 1,104 calories with 65g of protein to 4,554 calories with 186g of protein daily: Basically from subsistence to gluttony eating almost 200grams of fat on my ‘big’ day.

I’ve done this with zero connection to how much exercise I’ve had in a given day. My lowest day also included an hour and 16 minute workout going up and down the Coquitlam Crunch with a couple extra loops of the 457 stairs section.

I need to understand what I’m putting into my body, and also how much energy I’m outputting. I want to know what I do to fuel my body and ensure I’m doing so in a healthier way than I have been. Tracking is a start, knowledge is power, but it’s only a start. Tracking has taught me that I’ve got a lot more to learn.

Completely unaware

I recently joined a gym and got a few sessions with a trainer. It’s interesting being taught by a guy younger than my daughters, although I have to say he has an impressive amount of knowledge. The first time I met with him he asked me to track my food, and suggested the app MyFitnessPal, which I dutifully downloaded that night and started using it.

I know how important food is in taking care of myself. I saw the impact of supplementing my protein with a morning shake and paying attention to how much protein I take in. The results have been impressive. And yet I have been blissfully unaware of both the nutritional value and portion sizes of my meals until I had to track what I ate in an app.

I had no idea what 2 cups of pasta looked like on a plate? Not a clue what 2oz of pistachios looks like? Not a hint what the calorie or protein amount is in a Booster Juice Açai Avalanche Smoothie?

I was clueless.

Today I finally figured out how to connect my new Garmin watch data to MyFitnessPal. I had some issues with signing into both accounts to get them to speak. And now that I’ve figured it out I can identify if my calorie expenditure is more or less than what I’m burning. Again, something I know very little about.

So I’m actively doing something about my cluelessness, and hopefully heading in an even healthier direction. I have already been on a good path… yet I still have a lot to learn, and I think diet and tracking of my food has been the missing ingredient in my health journey.

Crappy user experience

A bit of a rant here. I’m doing some medical expense claiming and my provider has an App that is not designed with the end user in mind. First I have to go to 3 different pages to make a claim. Then after all the claim details are entered, I have to scroll down on a confirmation page that has my address on individual lines that take up to much screen real-estate that the ‘Consent and Declaration’ is hidden under the ‘Submit’ button. So you end up hitting the Submit button only then to learn that you need to scroll down and click the consent, which opens up in another page.

Also, I use my laptop and phone for much of the day and don’t need reading glasses, but my pharmacy prints the details I need to make the above claim in tiny, hard to read font. This is so unnecessary. It’s already really confusing trying to locate all the information, which is spread out into 3 different sections of the prescription receipt, does it also need to be in microscopic font? This is the only thing I’ve had to put reading glasses on to see in the last few months.

I get tired of user interfaces that are designed for the product and not the user. The insurance company probably doesn’t want to claims to be easy to do, they’d rather you had to go through a more challenging process to make a claim. The pharmacy changed their format so that the prescription receipt gets printed on a small sticker, and I’m sure cost saving was more important to them than providing a readable receipt for their aging customers. And this kind of behaviour may or may not be intentional, but it is ignorant of the end user’s experience. I’ve complained before about inconsistencies in remote controls, apps that want your attention at the cost of your convenience, and how it feels like we are decades behind where we should be when doing things like setting up a new printer. I would say that over 95% of the things I rant about are related to products and services providing crappy user experiences.

How hard would it be to have the customer in mind as a priority, rather than an afterthought?

Pay to use

Is it just me or is everyone feeling the drain of subscription fees? My wife bought a scale that also gives biometrics. The app is free, but you get ‘so much more’ with the subscription. Looking into the cost of this, I see that it is $129.99 a year or 19.99 a month.

It seems every app wants you to subscribe, but the cost is excessive. I don’t mind paying $12 a year to remove the ads from an app I use regularly and enjoy, but I don’t need all the bells and whistles for $10 to $20 a month. And I don’t need the reminders of all those features I’m missing out on every few times that I open the app.

Going back to the scale, it’s designed to not just weigh you, but to give you other biometrics as well… it’s those other features that made my wife buy it, at a much higher price, rather than buying a regular scale. So, if I buy the product, why should I pay monthly to use it? And if those added features cost money to maintain, well then figure out a cost structure that isn’t so expensive.

Small yearly subscriptions make sense when you want to continuously add features and content, or provide upgrades and maintenance. But just how many $10-$20 a month subscriptions can we manage? And do we really need to pay our scale that much? If it was just the scale, I could imagine a scenario where I’d be invested enough in what it provides to pay this much, but when it’s every product and app that does this, it’s simply unsustainable.

Tracking My Heart Rate

I’ve always had a slow pulse. When I was in my last year of high school I was in a pool training for water polo 10 to 12 times a week. When I took my pulse in the morning, it was usually between 32 and 35 beats per second. Now when I take my pulse, usually after my morning meditation, it tends to sit between 49 and 43 beats per minute.

It’s healthy to have a nice slow resting heart rate, but sometimes it can hinder me too. Sometimes, when I’m not active, I can feel tired and lazy. Especially after I eat a big meal. I think it’s because while my body focuses on digestion, my slow pulse doesn’t feed the rest of me enough to keep me going when I’m sedentary. So, I tend to move around a lot after lunch, because I’m not too productive sitting at my desk just after a meal.

I’ve recently been tracking my heart rate with my phone. As I mentioned, the first time is resting, after my meditation, the second time during my workout. The App works by putting my finger over the camera, with the light on. The problem is that I just had to switch phones and this new phone uses a camera that’s farther away from the light than my previous phone, and my measurement during or usually just after activity tends to fail and force a retry. This can happen several times and my heart rate is slowing while I do this.

I shouldn’t let this bug me. I can calculate my pulse without the App, but I like having it track my progress and it bugs me that I can’t get it to work easily. I’m going to have to try a new app, one that works for me, rather than fight me. I like tools to track my progress, that’s why my sticker chart works so well. So I need to find a new tracker, and surrender the fact that I paid for this App… which, while a nominal fee, wasn’t enough to keep my feeling frustrated on a regular basis. Our tools need to work for us, not against us.
