I grew up in Barbados in the 1970’s and back then there was only one television channel. On the weekends, there was nothing on until 9 am. That’s when two children shows would come on. I think it was on Sundays, in might have been Saturdays. First there was Sesame Street, then Spider-Man. These were the only shows that I saw cartoons on until I moved to Canada at almost 10 years old.

To this day I can’t see the name Spider-Man without hearing the song played for the opening credits of the 1970’s version.

This evening I went to see the new Movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day and it did not disappoint. I may no longer be the 7 year old kid wishing a radioactive spider could bite me too, but this movie did have me feeling nostalgic about those days as a kid wishing it could happen to me too.

I think that’s one of the appeals of Spider-Man, that he started out as an ordinary kid. He didn’t come from another planet, he wasn’t born with special powers. No, he had these things accidentally thrust upon him… And while the powers were great, they also made his life more challenging.

I haven’t seen a lot of the superhero movies, but I’m recalling liking the cross-over from other shows, and this has inspired me to watch some. Hard to believe, but despite being a Spider-Man fan I haven’t seen many of the previous movies, and none of the Infinity Stone movies, which I think Spider-Man plays a role in.

I think that’s going to change soon. It’s time for me to catch up!
