Gen X Wave

We are in for a unique change in the workforce. We are approaching a wave of Generation X retirements and that’s leading to shortages in the workforce. Teachers, nurses, doctors, plumbers, and many more positions that AI won’t easily replace, are seeing retirements happen faster than they can be replaced.

So part one of the change is simple to see, and that’s workforce shortages. The other part of this wave is these same Gen X’ers taking on different jobs. People retiring in their late 50’s and early 60’s are not all going to leave the workforce completely. This will happen for a couple reasons.

They won’t leave because their pensions need to be subsidized to live the life they want to live, and they won’t leave because work gives meaning to a lot of them… being productive is important in feeling young and staying healthy. Some of these people will continue working in their old fields after receiving there pension, ‘double-dipping’ and earning both a pension and also doing their old job part time. But others will go into whole new fields.

This is a part of the wave that is undefined and even exciting. I think you are going to see an increase in ‘creatives’ who are going to be 55+ in age. Older social media influencers, and artists, and producers of creative content. You’ll see novelists whose first best seller was written after the author turned 60. You’ll see short, clever, high quality filmmaking and storytelling. You’ll see new companies going viral with first-time CEO’s and entrepreneurs who are also senior citizens.

When Gen X retires they are going to ‘hit different’. Then again they are a generation that seemed to define themselves as different all along. I’m excited to see how they hit retirement are redefine it in the coming years.

At Inquiry Hub Secondary we had the privilege of getting Richard Campbell to present to us. He did 4 topical presentation, chosen from a list of 20 by our students, as well as an AMA – Ask Me Anything session. Here was the day’s schedule:

Debrief and Feedback

I’ve written a few thoughts on the future here on my Daily-Ink, but when I look back at these I see some dystopian views, and conversations about how we won’t see time travel and we won’t holiday on Mars any time soon. Yesterday I got to hear a lot of promise about the future ahead, and it was really refreshing.

Yes, the population of the world is growing, but that growth has slowed and the global population will likely peak at less than 11 billion. Advances in food production will continue and we will be able to feed the world.

Yes, energy production is a problem, but currently the two cheapest ways to produce energy are wind and solar, and their financial viability will make them more desirable. Also while fusion reactors are decades away, small modular nuclear fission reactors are an amazing technology far safer than current nuclear reactors. So the future of energy production holds a lot of promise.

Yes, climate change is one of the biggest concerns today, but in the coming decades we won’t just have the technology to reduce carbon emissions, but in the process we will develop the technology to the point that the byproducts of this process will be economically desirable. Richard posed the challenging question of how low do we take the carbon levels because if they are too low, that could create weather issues with more dangerous storms and shorter growing seasons… the problem won’t be too much CO2, but rather how much is too little?

It was so fascinating to have a futurist come to the the school and share with our students (and adults) the promise of a better future. I think that we often get the message that there is nothing but doom and gloom ahead. Having someone share a big picture view of a future that holds promise, new kinds of jobs, and exciting advances, was absolutely refreshing.

8 Billion

The world population will reach 8 billion in late 2022, or early 2023.

8 billion people!

There’s are more people alive today than the total number of people who have lived and already died.

I’m reminded of this scene from The Matrix:

‘We’ need to figure out how to sustain ourselves and our planet. While we worry about the coronavirus that is locking us down, we also need to figure out how we can be less like a virus and more like a mammal cohabitating with all the other living organisms on this planet.

The trick is, ‘we’ includes 8 billion people in 195 countries. A virus has a singular purpose: to spread its genes through infecting more hosts, humans are a bit more complex than that. Complex, complicated, and carelessly destroying our planet.

8 billion people.

8 billion different perspectives. 8 billion different realities. One planet.

7 Billion is a BIG Number
